Ask a PT-What is Kinesiology Tape?

Kinesiology tape, Kinesio tape, or K-tape was developed in 1975 in New Mexico by Dr. Kenzo Kase, a chiroprator.

This concept utilizes a latex-free, hypoallergenic tape designed to be worn for 3-5 days at a time. It is safe for all populations: in sports medicine, from elite athletes to weekend warriors; in health care, from geriatric to pediatric clients.

The application method – the tension (stretch), direction and placement – allows tape treatments to relax or stimulate muscles and support your joints, muscles, and tendons, to help improve your mobility. It can also help with swelling and scar tissue management.

While there are over 50 brands of kinesiology tape, most are very similar, but some specialize in different applications or purposes. You can find kinesiology tape almost anywhere, but it is not generally as simple as just putting the right tape where it hurts. Your All In physical therapist is able to give you the specific how and why kinesio tape should help your specific condition and maximize your results. Talk to your PT if you would like to know more. - Jason Allred, DPT
