Dizziness

Updated: Nov 11, 2022

Dizziness: a sensation in which one feels like movement is occurring that is not normal, in which a whirling sensation is detected.

There are various causes for dizziness, which include standing up too fast (orthostatic hypotension), medication side effects, dehydration, low blood sugar, head trauma, neck issues, normal aging process, an underlying medical condition of the neurological system, or vertigo.

Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) is a form of dizziness that can be assessed for and treated by a physician therapist. BPPV is the sensation of ones self or environment spinning around them, coming on with certain head movements, with limitations in steadiness and balance.

Tiny crystals in the ear can become dislodged and mag settle in a part of the canal that causes the sensation of dizziness or vertigo. Maneuvers can be performed to help place those crystals back into the appropriate spot that gives the sensation of steadiness and postural awareness. Certain exercises can be performed to help with steadiness and balance.
