We know what you are thinking …But you would be wrong in the Physical Therapy world.

Often injuries and surgery can bring muscle tightness or adhesions that restrict movement or make movement painful. Massage can help with this on occasion but, if the problem is deeper in the tissue another technique may be required. Enter the Art of Spooning.

This technique is known as Instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM) and is a modality that can be used to get deep into fascial restrictions to help break up adhesions at the muscle, tendon, and ligament levels. It is a great technique to use for getting into those layers that are adhesive and restrictive with the goals of improving mobility, increasing blood flow, and aiding with the healing process. Graston Tools can be used or other instruments like a Chinese soup spoon.

So, the next time you hear your therapist say, “It’s spooning time,” just note that your therapist will use a spoon to help with the healing process. And remove all your preconceived notions.
